Appearance: Powerful, compact, deep-chested aristocrat (up to 20 inches). Distinctive lion's-mane ruff, blue-black tongue, deep-set almond eyes (scowling, snobbish expression), stiff-legged gait. Rough or smooth coats (red, black, blue, cinnamon, cream).

Traits & Characteristics: Dignified, serious-minded, aloof. Cleanest of dogs (easy to housebreak, little odor, fastidious). Well-socialized Chows are refined, never fierce. Aloof with strangers, eternally loyal to loved ones. Serene, adaptable, no special exercise needs, happy in city life.
