Appearance: Among oldest retriever breeds. Tight, crisp coat curls (black or liver) provide all-weather protection. Large, durable gundog, but more elegant/graceful than other retrievers. Tapered, wedge-shaped head is distinctive.
Traits & Characteristics: Famously versatile gundog, peerless swimmer. Poised, proud, wickedly smart 'thinking person's retriever'. Affectionate, gentle, but more independent/less needy than Labs/Goldens. Playful/mischievous with loved ones, aloof with strangers (making them more discerning watchdogs). Need lots of outdoor exercise.
