Appearance: Tallest breed (males nearly 3 ft, up to 180 lbs). Immense, muscular hound built on Greyhound lines. Rough, hard coat in many colors (white, gray, brindle, red, black, fawn). Often called IW.

Traits & Characteristics: Calm, dignified, kindly, serene, agreeable companion. Once fearless big-game hunters (dispatching wolves). Too serene for fierce guard dogs (sight is deterrent). Patient with kids (supervision needed due to size). Owning one is rewarding but a huge commitment.

Origins: Ireland (ancient breed).
