Pekingese

Appearance: Compact, stocky toy (up to 14 lbs). Regal bearing, distinctive rolling gait. Coat longest at neck/shoulders (lion's mane); various reds. Large, short-muzzled head (wider-than-long rectangle). Large, dark, sparkly eyes. Effortless rolling gait unique. Often called Peke.

Traits & Characteristics: Created for ruling classes of ancient China. Sophisticated dogs, undying loyalty, subtle delights. Charming, confident companions, tight bond with favorite human. Serenely independent (like emperors who owned them); opinionated. Ever alert, good watchdogs. Tolerate kids but not roughhousing.
